This presentation examines the rise of authentic self-expression and self-actualization as central concepts for understanding optimal human functioning and well-being in contemporary society. It explores how modern models of well-being that emphasize autonomy, self-discovery, and personal growth have adopted authenticity as a key framework in both scientific and public discussions. While acknowledging the widespread acceptance of these authenticity-based approaches, the presentation emphasizes their Western cultural origins and questions their assumed universality. It cautions against applying individualistic ideals as a universal solution, especially in contexts where collectivist and traditional perspectives on personhood and well-being are prominent. The presentation calls for a more inclusive approach to understanding and promoting well-being globally.
