The aim of this invited talk is to present sociocultural factors that contribute to the adaption of migrants and refugees and examine ideologies that increase harmonious intergroup relations in plural societies.
The presentation consists of four components. First a review of an acculturation model, Multidimensional Individual Difference Acculturation (MIDA), is presented with data from various ethno-cultural groups in Canada. Core factors that contribute to the adaptation of migrants and refugees are examined. Second, a discourse analysis of the representations of migrants and refugees in the Canadian media is presented and the role of the media in producing public opinions is examined. Third, bias towards immigrants based on media consumption are explored using an experimental study (N = 1105). Specifically, intersectional perspectives based on ethnicity, gender, and sexuality is adopted. Fourth, multiculturalism as a policy and normative approach in managing diversity in plural societies is examined. A comparison is made between multiculturalism, interculturalism and assimilation approach and the policy implications of these concepts are explored.
